Once your tank looks like a cloudy lab experiment a good canister filter will remove
most of the particulate material so it doesn't rot in the tank and cause more die off.
Usually after a solid day the water will clear up and then you can clean the filter.  This
process has to be repeated several times over a period of two weeks to insure that
most of the critters on the rock survive the curing process.
